Hearing a new track from Atlanta-based singer-songwriter, Becca Harvey, aka, girlpuppy is enough to cure the winter blues. I've been anxiously awaiting her next move since her 2022 album, When I'm Alone. That record displayed Harvey's intense and insightful approach to songwriting, alongside sweet vocals with a knack for honesty. Tracks like "Wish and "Destroyer" remain timeless as the years go by.
Thankfully, the wait for new music from girlpuppy is over. Her latest track, "Champ," landed yesterday courtesy of the classic independent label, Captured Tracks.
Opening with a sea of fuzzed-out guitars, the track ushers in a new sound for Harvey, one with more bravado and volume, but never devoid of the emotional anchor her vocals contain. The contrast between her hushed vocals and the crashing guitars is attention-grabbing and anthemic. That cathartic rush is similarly felt in tracks like "Valentine," by Snail Mail. Harvey strikes the perfect balance in terms of those sonic dynamics.
The track was produced by Alex Farrar of the acclaimed Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, who's produced and recorded acclaimed albums for those like MJ Lenderman, Bnny, and Squirrel Flower among others. At times, you can hear the signature sound of Farrar's work on the song particularly through those strong guitar moments.
In a statement, Harvey stated that the song is about the ending of a friendship.
"‘It’s happening again, you don’t want to be my friend’ is about once again going through a random friend breakup and never knowing why. It’s basically a plea that no matter how
much this friend ignores me and shows me that they don’t want me in their life, I still try because I loved our friendship," said Harvey.
The track comes to us with a companion music video directed by Augie Voss and Benni Shumlin. The video stars Harvey alongside Suzy Clue as her boxing ring match-up. If this latest venture tells us anything, it's that girlpuppy's artistic presence is only growing, and this new song is another victory.
